Tourism Recovery in Lamu Derailed by Renewed US Travel Advisories

Tourism stakeholders in Lamu County have blamed the US government for derailing the recovery of tourism sector in Coast following renewed travel advisories for it citizens.

The stakeholders have asked the US and other countries, which have active travel warnings, to have them lifted. Lamu County acting tourism executive Kaviha Khamis said the latest travel advisories against Tana River, Lamu and Malindi could derail efforts to resuscitate the ailing sector.

They said the advisories are a slap on ongoing government efforts to market the circuit which was severely hit by insecurity following a spate of attacks by Al Shabaab in Mpeketoni, Kibaoni, Witu and Hindi in June and July 2014.
